Your teenager has a gamertag you know, an Instagram you found, and — statistically — two or three accounts you didn’t. Every parent can now run the same public-footprint check that investigators and catfish run. Used openly, it’s one of the most honest safety conversations you can have.
What to scan
Work from what you already know, then let variants do the rest:
- Known handles: gamertag, Instagram name, the art-account name, the old Musical.ly handle they think everyone forgot.
- Derivative patterns kids actually use:
xX_name_Xx, birthday suffixes, the @-less version, initials + numbers. - Your child’s real name as a handle — the impersonation check (below) doubles as a search for profiles they forgot to lock down.
Scan each across 3,000+ platforms (TraceScan, free first scan). One evening covers it.
Reading the results like a safety officer, not a warden
| Finding | What it means | Proportionate response |
|---|---|---|
| Accounts you didn’t know, DMs open | Exposure to strangers | Conversation about DM hygiene |
| Their name/photos on an account they didn’t create | Impersonation | Report together — kids learn platforms act |
| School name or age in an anonymous bio | Footprint leak | Teach the linkage: anonymous isn’t |
| Dormant accounts from years ago | Breach risk + embarrassment risk | Delete or anonymize together |
| Nothing new | Healthy footprint | Say so — good news deserves airtime |
The impersonation check (do this one every few months)
Fake accounts in a child’s name are used for bullying classmates, scamming the child’s friends, or grooming the child’s circle. Scan your child’s real name and photo-handle; anything you didn’t create together gets reported as impersonation. Platforms act quickly on minors’ impersonation reports — but only if someone looks.
The trust architecture
The scanning habit works only alongside the talking habit:
- Run scans together, on screen. The message is “this is what the world can see”, not “I’m watching you” — and it teaches a skill they keep for life.
- Rules for accounts, not for accounts’ content. You can require: every account is on the family list, DMs from strangers off, real identity never in bios — without reading a single message.
- Escalate real findings properly: threats, grooming or extortion go to the platform and, where needed, the police with documentation. Those situations are what the routine exists to catch — and they are rare, which is why the routine works.
The goal isn’t a surveillance state; it’s a kid who knows their footprint is visible, knows you check, and knows you’ll help first and judge second.
