What Is Email Enumeration?
also written as: email verification attack
Quick answer · Email enumeration is probing a platform — usually its sign-up or password-reset page — to determine whether a specific email address has an account there. The technique exploits response differences that leak registration status. Using it against someone else's email across many platforms is an abuse pattern with legal exposure; for auditing your own address, inbox search and breach databases do the job legally.

The mechanics are simple enough that they keep being rediscovered: enter an email into 'forgot password', and depending on the response, learn whether an account exists. Platforms have spent years closing these channels — generic confirmations ('if an account exists, we've sent a link') are the industry-standard defense, which makes modern enumeration noisy, slow and unreliable even before the legal problems start.
For your own email, none of this is necessary: the sign-up paper trail in your inbox and a breach-database check reveal the same map without probing anyone's systems. For someone else's email, there is no honest version — tools advertising email-to-account lookups are either reusing public traces (the email prefix as a username) or misrepresenting what they do. Understanding this distinction is what separates footprint research from an abuse technique.

Email Enumeration FAQ
How do I check which accounts my own email is linked to?
Legally and completely: search your inbox for sign-up and verification mails, check a breach database for services that registered your address, and scan your email prefix as a username across public platforms. No reset-page probing required.
Can a tool really look up accounts by someone else's email?
Not by enumeration — platforms block it and laws reach it. Honest tools derive the email's local part as a username and scan public surfaces, which is a handle scan wearing an email's clothes, and should be described as such.
