What Is OSINT?
also written as: open-source intelligence
Quick answer · OSINT — open-source intelligence — is the collection and analysis of information from publicly available sources: profiles, posts, registries, search engines and public records. It uses no hacking and no private data; its power comes from systematically combining what anyone could technically see. Username scanning across platforms is one of its most common practical techniques.

OSINT is a discipline with roots in military and journalistic practice, now central to verification work of every kind: journalists confirming an account belongs to who it claims, fraud investigators mapping a scammer's personas, and ordinary people checking a date or a seller. The defining line is the source: open means public — anything behind a login you don't own, or obtained by deception or intrusion, leaves OSINT territory.
The craft is less about tools than about method: form the question, collect across many public surfaces, and weigh corroboration. One profile proves little; the same handle, photo and biography details agreeing across several independent platforms is evidence. Tools that automate the collection — username scanners, breach checkers — speed up the collecting; judgment stays human.

OSINT FAQ
Is OSINT legal?
Collecting from public sources is legal in most jurisdictions, and it's the standard method of journalists and investigators. It stops being OSINT — and starts being potential intrusion or harassment — when it uses hacking, deception against platforms, or private data bought from leaks.
What's the difference between OSINT and stalking?
Purpose and proportion. OSINT answers a specific verification question with public data and stops; stalking is persistent tracking of a person regardless of their interest in being found. The same public data, used obsessively against an individual, crosses ethical and often legal lines.
