What Is Romance Scam?
also written as: dating scam, romance fraud
Quick answer · A romance scam is a fraud in which the scammer builds a fake romantic relationship — usually with a stolen persona — to extract money, gifts or financial access from the victim. The relationship is the product. Verification through the scammer's digital footprint, before money enters the picture, is the single most effective defense.

The script is stable across millions of cases: a persona with an attractive but conveniently unverifiable profession, an intense courtship that quickly moves off the dating app, a crisis or investment opportunity that requires money, and escalation as long as the payments continue. Personas are recycled industrially — the same stolen photos and biographies surface in case after case.
What breaks the script is independent verification. The claimed career can be checked against public records; the photos can be traced to the real person they were stolen from; the handle often resolves to other victims or to an entirely different identity. The pattern across this site's guides is uniform: verify the footprint before the first money request, because after it, every new 'fact' arrives manufactured.

Romance Scam FAQ
Who do romance scammers pretend to be?
Personas cluster around attractive, verifiable-sounding, hard-to-check professions: deployed military, offshore engineers, doctors between missions, widowed professionals. Each persona is chosen to explain why they can't meet in person or video chat.
Can you check if the person you're talking to is a scammer?
Yes, mostly — reverse-search their photos, scan their handle across platforms, and verify job claims against public records. Scammers' personas collapse under exactly this kind of cross-checking because the persona is assembled from stolen parts that don't agree.
